We've been in a major news cycle these past days. An earthquake in New Zealand, legislators fleeing their sworn duty in Wisconsin and Indiana, Americans killed by pirates in Somalia, and the revolution in Libya have dominated our headlines in recent days. So perhaps the news that President Obama has ordered his Attorney General Eric Holder to no longer defend in court the "Defense of Marriage Act" slipped by you.
Yet this news is so indicative of the day in which we live. Just a decade and a half ago, this bill passed the Congress of the United States by a considerable margin. Al Mohler shares about that time...
"The Defense of Marriage Act [DOMA] emerged in 1996 as at least one state — Hawaii — indicated the very real possibility that it would vote to approve same-sex marriage. The Act makes clear that no state can require any other state to recognize a same-sex marriage, and that the federal government is prohibited from extending marital benefits to same-sex couples. The Senate approved the measure by a vote of 85 to 14. In the House of Representatives, the vote was 342 to 67. Faced with such overwhelming congressional support, President Bill Clinton signed the bill into law."
There's been a staggering change in the thinking of our culture over the past 15 years. Couple that with the truth of the following verse and the actions of this past week are not as surprising...
"When the righteous increase, the people rejoice, But when a wicked man rules, people groan.... If a ruler pays attention to falsehood, All his ministers become wicked." Proverbs 29:2,12
